Redaction, covering, signing, and protection are different jobs
Choose the right operation for sensitive content, understand editable versus flattened export, and review local draft copies before sharing.
A dark rectangle is not automatically redaction
A normal rectangle, image, or watermark changes the visible page. The text and objects behind it can remain in the file. This is useful for design and review, but it is the wrong method for removing confidential information.
The watermark tool's cover mode has the same limitation. A covered mark may no longer be visible while its original content still exists. Use the dedicated Redact tool in Edit PDF for permanent removal from the affected page.
Use a deliberate redact-and-verify workflow
Work on a copy and mark every location that contains the information, including repeated headers or other pages. Leave enough margin around letters so fragments do not remain visible.
- Open the PDF in Edit PDF and choose Redact.
- Draw areas covering the sensitive content and inspect the selected pages.
- Read the export warning and export a new file.
- Close the editor preview and reopen the actual downloaded file. Search for the removed text and try selecting or copying it.
Know what the editor removes and what it does not
For pages containing redactions, this editor rebuilds the page as an image at approximately 200 DPI, applies the redaction, removes the original page objects and annotations, and reapplies your non-redaction editor objects. This happens in both export modes. Selectable text is lost on those pages because removal takes priority over preserving the original structure.
This is not a complete document sanitization service. Sensitive information can also exist in filenames, document metadata, attachments, bookmarks, or unredacted pages. A failed search alone does not prove the entire document is safe. Review those areas separately or use a specialist sanitization workflow when they matter.
Choose editable or flattened output for the remaining edits
Editable export keeps supported text, shapes, and other edits as PDF annotations so another compatible editor can work with them. Flattened export bakes annotations into page content for a more fixed appearance. Flattening an ordinary rectangle is not a substitute for using Redact first.
A visible signature is also an annotation or drawing rather than proof of identity. The Sign PDF tool does not create a certificate-based digital signature. If the original already has cryptographic signatures, editing can invalidate them; keep that signed original and use the recipient's required process.
Review local copies before leaving a shared computer
The editor can autosave the source PDF and editing state to IndexedDB in your browser. Recovery drafts expire after seven days, and the editor provides Clear local data. Exporting a redacted copy does not itself erase the source from the draft or your Downloads folder.
After you have verified and saved the intended output, use Clear local data in the editor. Delete unneeded source files, signature images, and downloads through your device's file manager separately. Password-protecting the final PDF does not encrypt those other copies.
Before you share the result
- The dedicated Redact tool was used, not just a cover shape.
- Every occurrence and relevant page was reviewed.
- The exported file was reopened and checked for visible and extractable remnants.
- Metadata, attachments, filenames, and local copies were considered separately.
