Practical example
Review a page and create a safe share copy
- Add a text comment and a transparent rectangle around an area to review.
- Use editable export when a collaborator should continue working with supported annotations, or flattened export for a fixed appearance.
- For confidential content, use Redact instead of an ordinary opaque rectangle and read the export warning.
Editable output preserves supported annotation edits. Flattened output bakes them into pages. Redacted pages are rebuilt and lose selectable text in both modes.
Capabilities and limits
- Only editor-created text, supported text annotations, and compatible form text fields can be edited directly. The editor warns and makes no change when static text cannot be safely rewritten.
- Permanent redaction rebuilds affected pages at approximately 200 DPI and removes their original page objects. It is not a document-wide metadata or attachment sanitizer.
- Editing may invalidate existing cryptographic signatures. Local drafts expire after seven days and can also disappear if browser storage is cleared or full.
When the result is unexpected
A line has a blue rectangular outline
The thin outline is a selection control for moving and resizing, not a filled shape. Deselect the object to hide it.
Text still copies from behind a rectangle
A normal shape only covers content visually. Use the dedicated Redact tool, export, and test the new file.
Check the downloaded file
Reopen the exported file, inspect each changed page, and search for redacted terms. Use Clear local data when finished on a shared computer; downloaded files must be removed separately.

Edit PDF FAQ
Can I rewrite original PDF text?
You can edit text created in the editor and supported PDF text annotations or form fields. Static original page text stays selectable but cannot be safely rewritten in the browser; use Add Text or Redact instead.
What is the difference between editable and flattened export?
Editable export keeps supported changes as standard PDF annotations. Flattened export bakes annotations into the pages for wider compatibility.
Are redactions permanent?
Yes. Pages containing redactions are securely rebuilt at about 200 DPI, so their original objects are removed and selectable text is lost on those pages.
