The box may be part of the source image. Use an image that already has transparency; reducing opacity makes the whole image lighter.

Reduce its size or opacity or move it away from tables and signatures.
Check the downloaded file
Inspect varied page sizes and backgrounds. Confirm the watermark is readable but does not obscure dates, amounts, signatures, or small print.
